Understanding the difference between inviting someone to call in versus to speak is extremely helpful in curating a smooth live room experience.

What is the Caller Queue?

The caller queue is where your listeners will appear when they indicate they’d like to speak. The caller queue is self-selecting. A listener will tap the phone icon in the bottom right-hand corner of their screen and then join the caller queue.

From there, you as the host have the option to pick up a caller by tapping on the blue plus button to the left of the queue (”Take next caller”). Prompt the caller to unmute themselves, and then interact away!

When the caller is done speaking, they simply need to tap the red “hang up” button to remove themself as the caller and rejoin the listeners group. You can also force mute or return a caller to the listener group by tapping their profile image and selecting the appropriate action.

The Caller Queue should be used as a way to interact with your listeners (i.e. answer questions, address comments, etc.) in a more short-form way. The Caller Queue turns a live room into a “call-in radio” show. However, when you have on a guest speaker or panel of speakers that will be talking the entire episode, they should not be in the caller queue, they should be in the speaker group.

What is Invite to Speak?

Say you’re having an amazing conversation with one of your callers. You want to keep talking to this caller, but see there’s a whole line of callers waiting in the caller queue to speak.

Fear not! By tapping on the profile picture of the caller, you can invite them to speak and give them full speaking privileges. They’ll receive a push notification inviting them to speak. As soon as they accept, they’ll join you up in the speakers group, and you’re free to pick up the next caller.

Invite to speak should be used to give someone a greater platform to speak and chime into the conversation with greater freedom. But don’t worry, you will always have the power to force mute or remove someone from the speaker section if need be.
